The painting is mounted on backing board in places. There are puncture holes in the corners due to a previous mounting. There are tears and crease marks along the edge of the painting.
Biografie
Johannes Grützke was born in Berlin in 1937. He was a German painter, draftsman, graphic artist, and medalist. From 1957 to 1964, he studied at the Berlin University of the Arts under Hans Orlowski and later as a master student of Peter Janssen. While still a student, he took a course with Oskar Kokoschka at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. Together with Manfred Bluth, Matthias Koeppel, and Karlheinz Ziegler, he founded the “School of New Splendor” in 1973. In 1976–1977, Johannes Grützke taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg. In 1987, he succeeded Oskar Kokoschka at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. In addition to his work as a painter and graphic artist, Grützke worked as a set designer for the theater, including as artistic advisor to Peter Zadek at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg from 1985 to 1988. Grützke passed away in May 2017.
To this day, Grützke’s works can be seen in numerous exhibitions and retrospectives. For his body of work, the artist received, among other awards, the Grand Art Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (1984), the Hannah Höch Prize of the State of Berlin (2012), and the Federal Cross of Merit (2002).
